A single tilted column rising above the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek is the detail that sets this view apart from other scenes of the site. The temple, one of the largest Roman sanctuaries in the eastern Mediterranean, was built on a much older religious site in the Beqaa Valley, and by the 1890s it stood among tumbled blocks and fallen shafts. The Photochrom process used to make this print combined photography with hand-applied color from multiple stone plates, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold these views to American buyers as images of the Holy Land.
