Micklegate Bar is the gateway on York's southwest side, and it was the traditional point where reigning monarchs were formally welcomed on entering the city. Its spikes were also used to display the heads of executed traitors, a grim practice that lasted into the fifteenth century. This view is a photochrom, a Swiss process that printed several lithographic stones in layers to produce color. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose 1905 catalog listed it, sold such prints to American buyers as colored souvenirs of English towns.
