Lulworth Cove, on the Dorset coast of southern England, is a nearly circular inlet cut into a ridge of pale limestone, with the sea entering through a narrow gap in the cliffs. This view dates from the 1890s, when the coast was already drawing walkers and holidaymakers. The image was made by the photochrom process, which combined a black-and-white photograph with several hand-prepared lithographic stones to add color. Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of English scenes.
