Lichfield Cathedral's three spires, which earned it the nickname "the Ladies of the Close," are the feature that stands out in this view of the south side. The cathedral was built mainly between the 13th and 14th centuries and was damaged during the English Civil War, when Royalist defenders held the Close against Parliamentary forces in 1643. This photochrom was made in Switzerland using a process that combined a photographic negative with hand-applied color stones, and the Detroit Publishing Co. sold it in America as part of its England series. Its print number in the 1905 catalog helps date the sale, though the image itself was likely made in the 1890s.
