Dixcart Bay lies on the west coast of Sark, where a wooded valley runs down to a small sandy beach. The view was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that transferred a photograph onto several lithographic stones, one per color, to produce a hand-colored look. This copy comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold photochrom views in America. In the 1890s Sark was a quiet island with no motor cars and a feudal government led by its seigneur, which drew travelers curious about its old ways. The title says England, but the Channel Islands are Crown dependencies rather than part of mainland England, a point worth noting for researchers.
