Hitterdal Church stands in Telemark, the inland county of southern Norway known for its rugged valleys and old wooden and stone churches. This photochrom print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of Norwegian views, a series sold to American buyers who wanted colorful glimpses of distant places. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, transferred a black-and-white photograph onto several lithographic stones, one for each color, so the final image is a hand-built color print rather than a true color photograph.
