Gudvangen sits at the inner end of the Nærøyfjord, a narrow arm of the Sognefjord, and this view places the village and the steep valley walls around it in a single frame. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that built color from several stone lithographic plates laid over a photographic base. The Detroit Publishing Co. sold these views to American travelers and armchair tourists under its own catalog numbering, and this copy is listed in its 1905 catalog. Its date falls somewhere in the 1890s, when fjord travel in western Norway was growing and steamship tourism was bringing visitors into such remote valleys.
