Raftsund is a narrow strait in northern Norway, where steep mountain walls rise straight from dark water, and this view captures that dramatic setting. The print comes from the photochrom process, in which photographs were transferred to lithographic stones and hand-colored in several layers, producing the soft, saturated tones that made these views popular. Detroit Publishing Company issued it in the early 1900s, and its catalog number suggests it was sold as part of a broad series of scenic places in Norway and elsewhere. Such views were often bought by travelers who had seen the coast from steamers and wanted a lasting record of it.
