Laatefos, the waterfall near Odde at the head of the Hardanger Fjord, is the subject that sets this view apart from the fjord scenes around it. Photochrom views like this one were made in the 1890s by a Swiss process that transferred a photographic negative to lithographic stone, then added color by hand, which gave the scenes their soft, painterly tones. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such prints in America through its catalogues, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog as number 7015, a record of Norwegian scenery at a time when travelers were beginning to visit the western fjords.
