A young woman in traditional dress gives this view its subject, set against the Hardanger Fjord in western Norway, a region known for its orchards, steep valleys, and the Hardanger embroidery style that takes its name from the district. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that was licensed in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company. It was issued in the company's catalog J in 1905 as print number 7011, and its date is estimated at between about 1890 and 1900. Such views were popular with American travelers and armchair tourists who wanted color images of distant places and rural life.
