The view shows Eide and Skjervefos on the Hardanger Fjord in western Norway, a region of steep mountainsides, orchards and farms running down to the water. The print is a photochrom, made by a process that transferred a photograph onto a series of lithographic stones, each inked in a different color, so the finished image looks like a painted or colored picture. The Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its 1905 catalog J as print no. 7007, and the photograph itself dates from between about 1890 and 1900. Its popularity with travelers of the period helped make Norway's fjords familiar to American audiences.
