Raftsund, a strait in the Lofoten islands of northern Norway, is the subject here, shown as a stretch of water framed by steep, rocky slopes. The print is a photochrom, a process Detroit Publishing Co. used to turn black-and-white photographs into color prints by layering several lithographic stones, one per hue. Issued in its 1905 catalog as number 7119, the view was one of many Norwegian coastal scenes the company sold to travelers and armchair tourists. The date range printed on the record, roughly the 1890s, points to the years when Lofoten was becoming a destination for visitors drawn to its fjords and dramatic peaks.
