Pozzuoli sits on the bay west of Naples, and its best-known remains are the ruins of the Serapis Temple, whose marble columns show holes bored by sea mollusks, a record of the land's slow rise and fall. The town was a Roman port called Puteoli, and its large amphitheater reflects the wealth it drew in the first century. This photochrom print was made by layering several color stones over a black-and-white photograph, and the Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in its 1905 catalog of Italian views. The company sold such images widely to American travelers before color photography was common.
