Fuentarrabía, the Spanish town now called Hondarribia, sits on the Bidasoa estuary at the French border, and this view centers on its principal gate through the old walls. The town grew up as a fortified frontier post, and its defenses reflect centuries of conflict and rebuilding. The picture was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method of multi-stone color printing that the Detroit Publishing Company sold to American buyers as travel views. Its soft, painterly tones were meant to make distant Spanish places feel close to hand. The record dates the print to between about 1890 and 1900, and it appears in the company's 1905 catalog.
