Few buildings in Florence are as recognizable as the octagonal Baptistry, which stands across from the cathedral and appears here in soft, layered color. It is best known for its bronze doors, and the east set by Lorenzo Ghiberti, worked on from 1424 to 1452, was so admired that Michelangelo reportedly called it the Gates of Paradise. This print was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that built color from several lithographic stones, and the Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its catalog of Italian views around 1905.
