The lion that gives this view its title stands beside the staircase at the Bardo, the former palace of Tunis's Husainid beys, on the city's western edge. The Bardo grew over the 19th century into a place of state ceremony and government business, and its carved stone and tiled courts drew early travelers and photographers. This print is a photochrom, a process that transferred a black-and-white photograph to stone and added color by hand, so the warm tones of the stairs and walls reflect the work of the colorists as much as the light of the day. The Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its 1899 catalog of scenic and architectural views, which sold these images to tourists and armchair travelers in the United States.
