Among the many Photochrom views of North Africa on this board, this one stands out for its focus on people rather than monuments: a loose group of men identified in the record as "wandering Arabs" pausing in Tunis, Tunisia. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog F of scenic, architectural and marine views, issued in 1899, and it reflects the firm's commercial appetite for picturesque scenes of distant lands. The photochrom process, which transferred a black-and-white photograph onto multiple lithographic stones inked in different colors, gave such images a painted, postcard-like softness. Its label reflects the period's European and American habit of framing North African people as exotic types, a point worth keeping in mind when viewing it today.
