The Bastion is a sandstone rock outcrop in Saxon Switzerland, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains southeast of Dresden, where a narrow footbridge spans the gorges above the river. Tourists began visiting the area in large numbers during the 19th century, and this view reflects the appeal of its dramatic rock formations. The photochrom process used to make this color print, developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, produced vivid images that the Detroit Publishing Company sold as travel souvenirs. The print's catalog number places it among its German views.
