Few buildings in late-nineteenth-century Germany expressed the new empire's ambitions as plainly as the Reichsgericht in Leipzig, the seat of the Imperial Court of Justice. Its construction was completed in 1895, and the building was designed to make the highest court of the newly unified nation visible in the city. This photochrom view, made by the Swiss Photochrom process and sold in America by the Detroit Publishing Company, shows the imposing stone structure in the soft, saturated colors that made such prints popular with travelers and armchair tourists.
