The vantage point is the key detail here: the view is taken from the Ministry of War in Saxony, looking out over the Altstadt, Dresden's old town on the Elbe's north bank. Photochrom prints like this one were made by a Swiss process that transferred a photographic image onto stone for multicolor lithography, which gave tourist views of the 1890s a painted, saturated look. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold these German views in the United States, and this copy is catalogued in its 1905 list. Its printed date falls in the 1890s, when Dresden was known for its baroque skyline and was a popular stop for travelers.
