Sassnitz, a harbor town on the northeast coast of the Isle of Rügen, appears here as seen from the water, with the shoreline and buildings rising behind the quay. The view comes from the Photochrom process, a color printing method that combined several lithographic stones, each inked in a different tone, to reproduce a photograph in color. Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America under license from the Swiss firm that developed the process, and its catalog made German scenery available to armchair travelers. The town's harbor was growing in the 1890s as rail and ferry links to the Baltic coast expanded, so the picture captures a working waterfront at a time of change.
