The street in this view, the Schwedenstrasse, takes its name from the long Swedish rule over the island of Rügen, which ended in 1815 when the island passed to Prussia. Sassnitz itself is a small port town on Rügen's northeast coast, and the photochrom process captured its streets and shoreline in soft, saturated color. The print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of German views, which sold color reproductions of European scenes to American buyers. Its making, around the 1890s, reflects a brief period when chromolithographic-style color photographs were a popular way to see distant places.
