From the Hirschgasse, a lane on the Neckar's bank, this view looks across the river toward Heidelberg's old town and the castle on the slope above. The photochrom process printed several monochrome images in succession, each in a different color, so the finished print has a soft, painted look. Detroit Publishing Company sold these German views in the United States around 1900, and this one is listed in its 1905 catalog as number 1250. Heidelberg, a university town in Baden, drew many travelers to its castle ruins, which made views like this popular souvenirs.
