Few places in Germany were more closely tied to printed books than the Buchhändlerbörse, or book traders' exchange, in Leipzig, which this color view records. For much of the 19th century Leipzig was the center of the German book trade, and publishers and booksellers gathered here to settle accounts and trade stock, especially at the semiannual trade fairs. The photochrom process behind the print, an early color method that printed a photograph from several lithographic stones, each inked in a single hue, was popular with travelers and was distributed in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company.
