Few Baltic resorts were as fashionable as Zoppot, and this view pairs its spa garden with the landing pier where steamers brought holidaymakers ashore. Then part of East Prussia and now Sopot in Poland, the town grew into a popular seaside destination in the late nineteenth century, drawing visitors from nearby Danzig and beyond. The print is a photochrom, a process developed by the Photoglob company in Zürich that built color from several lithographic stones, giving the scene its soft, painterly tones. Photochroms of German resorts like this were sold as souvenirs, so the image shows how travelers wanted to remember the coast.
