Badenweiler sits at the edge of the Black Forest, and its warm mineral springs drew bathers for centuries before this view was made, including the Romans, whose baths still survive. By the 1890s it had become a fashionable spa, and the photochrom process used here, which turned photographs into multicolor lithographs, was popular for capturing resort scenes like this one. The print is catalogued by the Detroit Publishing Co. under number 16596 in its 1905 list of German views.
