Bernkastel-Kues sits on a bend of the Moselle, and this print frames the town beneath Burg Landshut, the ruined hilltop castle that has watched over the river valley for centuries. The photochrom process used here, a Swiss method that built color from multiple lithographic stones printed over a photograph, gave the Moselle's vineyards and half-timbered houses a soft, saturated look. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American buyers in the 1890s and early 1900s, when travel to the German wine country was a popular subject for armchair tourists.
