Traben-Trarbach is a pair of neighboring towns on the Moselle River, and this view shows the valley where the river bends between steep vineyard slopes. The picture was made with the photochrom process, a Swiss method that used multiple lithographic stones to give photographs soft, painted-looking color. Detroit Publishing Co. sold photochroms in America under license, and this print is listed in its 1905 catalog of German views. Such scenes were popular with American travelers and armchair tourists who wanted color images of Europe.
