Marksburg rises above the small town of Braubach on a steep hillside of the Middle Rhine, and it is one of the few castles in this stretch of river that was never destroyed. The photochrom process used here, developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, built color from several stone plates, so the greens of the slopes and the tones of the stone walls were applied by hand. The view captures a stretch of river that drew steady tourist traffic by steamer in the decades around 1900, when the Rhine's castles were becoming a popular destination.
