Adenau lies in the Eifel hills of western Germany, and the Ahr River that runs past it winds down a steep valley toward the Rhine. This print comes from the Photochrom Company of Zurich, whose process built up color from several lithographic stones printed over a photograph in the 1890s. The Detroit Publishing Company held American rights to these images and sold them through its catalogues, which helped spread views like this one across the United States. The valley's slopes are known for their vineyards, and the process gives its greens and reds a soft, painted quality.
