Andermatt is a village in the canton of Uri, set in the high Ursern Valley where the roads over the Gotthard, Furka, and Oberalp passes meet. Its position on the main north-south route through the Alps made it a stop for travelers, soldiers, and merchants long before tourists arrived in numbers. This view comes from the photochrom process, a Zurich-developed method that printed photographs in color from multiple stone plates, each hand-retouched before printing. Its vivid tones show how the process was marketed to travelers in the 1890s as a way to bring Swiss scenery home.
