Aberdovey, known in Welsh as Aberdyfi, sits where the Dyfi estuary meets Cardigan Bay in Gwynedd. This general view comes from the Photochrom series, a Swiss process that printed color images from black-and-white negatives using a set of stone lithographic plates, each hand-colored. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog as number 10597. Made in the 1890s, it shows a small resort town that Victorian holidaymakers reached by rail and sea, when Wales was becoming a popular destination for seaside trips.
