A herd of cows grazing at Johannisberg, near St. Moritz in the canton of Grisons, sets this view apart from the lake and mountain scenes that dominate Swiss travel imagery of the period. The print was made by the photochrom process, a commercial color method that used a separate stone for each hue and gave photographs a painted, luminous finish. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views to American buyers from its catalog, and this one appears under print number 9596 in its 1905 listing of Swiss scenes. Its pastoral subject, from a village better known to tourists as a resort, shows how travel photography also recorded everyday rural life.
