The subject is the pier at Blankenberge, a Belgian resort on the North Sea coast, within easy reach of Bruges. The photochrom process behind this print was developed in Switzerland and used in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company, which built color views from tinted photographic negatives printed from several lithographic stones. The company listed this view in its Belgium series in a catalog of about 1905, though the photograph itself dates from the 1890s, when seaside piers drew growing crowds of holidaymakers to the European coast.
