Few things set this view apart from other seaside scenes like it as clearly as its subject: the royal chalet at Ostend, a retreat associated with King Leopold II of Belgium, who spent much of his time on the coast. Ostend had grown into a fashionable resort by the late 1800s, drawing visitors to its beaches, promenades and grand hotels. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1890s and sold in America by the Detroit Publishing Co., which issued hand-tinted-looking views like this one as souvenirs of European travel.
