The promenade deck of the North German Lloyd steamer *Grosser Kurfürst* is the focus here, a stretch of open deck where first-class passengers walked, sat, and watched the coastline or open water slide past. North German Lloyd, the Bremen-based line, carried travelers and emigrants across the Atlantic, and its large liners were showpieces of the era's shipbuilding. This print comes from the Photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to multiple lithographic stones and hand-colored, giving the scene its soft, painterly tones. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America in the 1890s and early 1900s, which is why the picture reached a wide public as a souvenir of travel.
