The Tombs of the Caliphs lie in the desert edge northeast of Cairo, a necropolis of domed mausoleums and mosques built over several centuries of Islamic rule, many of them under the Mamluk sultans. David Roberts sketched the site during his journey through Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into this color lithograph for the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's lithographs were admired for their architectural accuracy and their warm, atmospheric light, and this view shows how the carved stone domes stood against the open desert.
