The lithograph shows the Tombs of the Caliphs, a large burial ground on the desert edge northeast of Cairo, where domed mausoleums and small mosques stand among the sandstone and limestone. The tombs date mainly from the Mamluk sultanate, roughly the 13th to 16th centuries, and their carved stone screens and geometric decoration drew travelers' attention long before photography. David Roberts made his Egyptian sketches during his travels in the late 1830s, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for the three-volume *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849.
