This print shows one of the domed tombs in the great cemetery north of Cairo, often called the City of the Dead, that the record identifies as a tomb of the khalifs. David Roberts sketched Cairo during his visit to Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. The cemetery's mausoleums, built mostly under the Mamluk sultans from the 13th to 16th centuries, are known for their carved stone, arched portals, and geometric ornament. Roberts's views helped European readers picture these monuments at a time when few had seen them firsthand.
