Roberts's view of the Gate of the Metwaleys shows one of the entrances into old Cairo, named for the Metwali, a Shia community that lived in the city. Roberts traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, sketching monuments and street scenes on the spot. Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon in three volumes between 1846 and 1849. The plate reflects the European fascination with Cairo's medieval architecture in the decades before photography became common in the region.
