Looking out from a city gate, this view turns toward the desert road that leads to Suez, with the walls of Cairo on one side and open sand on the other. David Roberts, the Scottish painter, made his sketches on the spot during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839. Louis Haghe turned them into this color lithograph, which was published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849 as part of *Egypt & Nubia*. The print reflects the picturesque taste of its day, when European readers eagerly looked to the Near East through such images.
