David Roberts drew this view of Cairo from a vantage point looking west, and it appeared as a color lithograph in the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, the large folio set published in London between 1846 and 1849. Roberts, a Scottish painter who spent months sketching in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, made the original drawings on the spot, and Louis Haghe transferred them to stone for printing. The plate shows the city's mosques, minarets and dense rooftops as a traveler of the period would have seen them, and it remains one of the most widely reproduced records of Cairo in the decades before photography became common there.
