Roberts drew this Cairo coffee shop on the spot during his tour of Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned the sketch into a color lithograph for the book's third volume. Coffee houses were among the city's main public meeting places, where men gathered to smoke pipes, play games, talk, and listen to storytellers. Roberts's interest in such scenes of everyday street life helped make his Egyptian views popular with British readers, who had little firsthand knowledge of the country. The plate appeared in the London edition published by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849.
