Roberts's view of the Tombs of the Memlooks shows the domed mausoleums on the eastern edge of Cairo, where sultans and nobles of the Mamluk dynasty were buried. Roberts sketched Egypt during his travels there in 1838 and 1839, and the lithographs made from those drawings were issued in London later in the 1840s, with this plate appearing in the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia*. Louis Haghe, the lithographer who transferred the sketches to stone, gave the print its color, and the image remains a record of Cairo's monuments as European travelers saw them in the mid-nineteenth century.
