The domed tombs of the Mamluk sultans and emirs, set on the desert edge northeast of old Cairo, are the subject here. Roberts sketched them during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred his drawing to stone for this color lithograph in the third volume of *Egypt and Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The Mamluks ruled Egypt from 1250 to 1517, and their funerary architecture, with its carved stone, ribbed domes, and tall minarets, gave Roberts a subject that joined decay and grandeur. The color plate works to show the warm stone against the pale desert sky.
