Roberts drew this scene of the slave market in Cairo during his 1838 to 1839 tour of Egypt, and it appeared as a color lithograph in the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Louis Haghe transferred Roberts's sketch to stone, so the finished plate reflects the artist's eye for architecture and crowds as well as his on-the-spot observation. Printed for a British readership that had abolished both the slave trade and slavery in its colonies, the plate offered viewers a view of a trade that was still legal in Egypt at the time. It is worth looking closely at how the figures are arranged around the market space.
