Known locally as the Tombs of the Khalifs, though most honor Mamluk sultans and their families rather than caliphs, these domed mausoleums stand on the desert edge north of Cairo. David Roberts, the Scottish painter, sketched them during his journey through Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe translated his drawings into color lithographs for *Egypt and Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon in the late 1840s.
