Bulaq, the Nile port of Cairo, is the subject here, a riverside district that handled much of the city's trade and traffic. David Roberts made his drawings on the spot during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred them to color lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The plate is worth a look for its record of a working waterfront that Western travelers of the period often passed over for the monuments of the older city.
