Roberts drew this view of Cairo during his Egyptian tour of 1838 and 1839, and it appeared as a color lithograph in the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. Louis Haghe transferred Roberts's sketches to stone, and the finished plates were prized for combining topographical accuracy with the atmosphere of the city's skyline and streets. Cairo at that time was a dense Ottoman-era city of minarets and domes, and Roberts's record of it captured a place that was changing quickly under Muhammad Ali's modernization programs.
