The Mosque of Sultan Hassan, a Mamluk-era mosque begun in the 1350s, is the subject here, shown with its massive stone walls and towering portal. David Roberts sketched the scene on the spot during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred it to a color lithograph for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. It appears on page 8 of the third volume, where its dramatic scale helped shape how European readers pictured Cairo's medieval architecture.
